Harry Potter analysis:
Setting -
The location in this scene is in Hogwarts the school of Witchcraft and Wizardry and the action takes place in the dining hall.
The fact that the pupils are sitting at the tables with plates and cutlery and the teachers are sitting at the long table at the end of the hall, facing the students. This indicates that they are about to eat but at waiting for the new students to arrive.
The lighting in the hall was golden and warm with lots of pupils sitting in it. The plates and cutlery are silvers and shiny. There are torches hanging on the wall which suggests that it is warm and light in the hall, which is very big and has candles floating above them which gives off a very magical feeling. I think this indicates that the films has a family, fantasy and adventure genre.
The setting indicates a very warm and grand feeling, for me the lighting, colours, props and all the students and teachers being in there together gives of that mood.
The setting suggests the Dumbledores character is very important. He is sitting in the middle of the grand hall, in the middle of the table, sitting the biggest chair with lots of different patterns and colours on it, and he is wearing unique robes and hat out of all the teachers. The setting also suggest that Draco Malfoy's character is very dark. When the camera is turned onto him the music goes to a very dark, slow and low. This shows that he is going to be a bad character in the film and he is going to cause trouble.
Costume -
The costumes suggest a magical and traditional period. The teachers are all in gowns and hats which comes across as if they are quite powerful and traditional, but there is type of querky feeling towards them, that they have their own styles and unique qualities.

Thoroughly
analyze the clip
and comment on the 4 areas, camera, editing, sound &
mise-en-scene. Use your definition sheets to help you.
Once
you have identified the technique go on to say
why you think the
technique was used.
For
example:
“The
extreme wide
shots of
the ship following the other ship across the sea shows
the proximity of danger
to the heroes in this chase.”

Blank screen first 5
seconds
|
The
beginning of this clip, it starts off with a low angle towards
the ship.
|
It
clip starts off with the ship in the ocean, this gives the
viewer a sence of the entire size of the ship. The speed is quite
fast showing that there is a sense of urgency. There is then a
cut to the black pearl coming up from behind, they shoot this on
the side of the ship so that you get Keira knightly’s sence of
looking out at the boat. There is a wide distance from their ship
to the black pearl. This then cuts back to the intensity on deck
. It cuts to below deck, which shows a different story of whats
happening up on deck. This is showing jack sparrow being put in
prison.
|
Diegetic
sound, and there is incidental music in the background. |
The
colour design was mostly blue, the sky was a clear blue and the
sea was a dark blue. There is smoke and a misty cloud around the
ship, making the boat look depressing.
|
|
0.5-1 minute
|
The
first part, Keira Knightley is getting out and the she is in a
Medium close up. Then a low angle of a guy shouting. Then
another low angle of the woman steering the boat. It then shows
the boat behind closing in in a long shot. There is then a high
angle shot of Keira looking down on her as she starts climbing up
to the same level as the camera. There is then a point of
view shot of jack sparrow looking into a hole in the side of the
boat out to sea.
|
It goes to the men
getting the cannons ready, which shows the watchers that a fight
is about to break out. There is then a switch to watching
both the boats sail, that shows how close the black pearl is.
Then cuts to back on deck.
|
There
is incidental music going in this first minute, and there is
diegetic sound of the wheel turning around and the sea in the
background. There is also diegetic sound . There is diegetic
sound going on when jack sparrow is walking through the water in
the cell. |
The
first part of the location in this first minute is on the boat
and its showing all the pirates rushing around on board. The
colours in this scene are all quite dark. The woman steering the
boat is wearing a pirates hat. The lighting is bright on the
boat, then changes to being dark when they show jack sparrow
being pushed into the cell. |
|
1-2 minutes
|
At the beginning of the second minute of this
scene, it shows a close up of a man shouting at other pirates.. A
low angle shot happens when the flag is being hoisted up. There
is then a medium long shot of a guy looking out to sea whilst
standing on the side of the boat. Then there is a low angle shot
looking up at the same guy. As the boats go past in the next
part, the camera is on a high angle shot. |
This
scene shows the speed when people are loading the cannons, and
quicklygetting ready . It cuts to the guys loading the cannons..
It then cuts up to the captain looking down on the ship. You then
see jack sparrows view when he’s looking out of the hole in the
side of the boat. The speech on deck is getting louder. |
There
is still incidental music going on, and s also diegetic sound is
happening when the cannon holes open up on the side of the boat..
They use diegetic sound when they throw a barrel into the water. |
The
location in this minute is mostly up top on the boat. The
lighting is bright and the sky is quite blue and clear. All the
costumes are the same, dirty and old looking. The makeup in it is
just dirt on the faces and making the people look dirty.
There is a flag at the top of the boat suggeting the symbol of
death.

lighting is bright and the sky is quite blue and clear. The
costumes are all dirty and rough looking and the make-up makes
the people look dirty. There is a flag at the top of the boat
with a skull suggeting death.
|
|
|
The
location is on the boat. It looks dark and depressing. The
costumes and make-up are the same. Jack sparrow has a'lot of eye
make-up on and his costume is a more multi-coloured than the
others. On the boat behind there is smoke suggeting that it isn't
a nice place to be.
|
|
3-4 minutes
|
At
the start, there is a extreme close up of the mans face when he
has the monkey. There is a pan going round the boat. Then there
is a low angle of two guys pushing the steering wheel around.
Then the other shot is coming in front and then it shortly

squigy sound of the fork in the guys eye and when the guy takes
it out, there is the same squgy sound. |
The
location again is either up on deck of down bellow shooting
cannons. The atmosphere is very cloudy and mysterious. On the
inside of the boat it is dark and sad. The mens faces are dirty
like they haven't had a wash in a really long time and their eyes
are a bit yellow suggeting that they are the healthiest people
and maybe the drink a bit too much alcohol.

Portals -
At the beginning of this scene there is slow motion eg. when the pens are being put down and when they are taken, I think this makes the clip look like it is a very bad that the pen has been taken, even though its really not that bigger deal. It is also quite clear that the pens have been taken which gets the sets the story off. When it shows me coming out of the bathroom, even though I walked out of the classroom, a medium close up was used. I think this shows that I was confused about where I had ended up and that I didn't know I was going into different portals. The when Aaron comes out of the bathroom, another medium close-up is used, to me shows that even though he didn't know he was going into a portal, he was determined to get his pen back. Then when I am running down the stairs, it is clear that I am coming out of another portal because I had just gone upstairs and then I am going downstairs. When I run into the camera, and then come out is another portal, I end up in the quad and start running again. I think that editing was good then, because it really looked like I was coming out of a portal. Then, when I am running into the locker, it quickly cuts and shows Aaron running past, that shows that the chase isn't over yet and he is still trying to look for me which keeps the intensity of the clip. After, I am in the locker rom and I sit in the chair and end up in the chapel. The camera shot and the cutting was really good them because it went dark and when I sat up I was in the chapel instead. I think this shows that I didn't have time to sit down, that I had to always find a different place to hide. After I have run out of the chapel, Aaron comes through the door, but he hasn't come through a portal, but he still knows where I am going, and then he walks starts walking to other door, the clip then ends which keeps it a bit of a mystery of whether he ever found me and got his pen back.
